REFUGEES FROM SUDAN IN ISRAELHighlight Films produces a TV reports about refugees from Sudan arriving to Israel. Sudanese refugees: Many thousands of refugees escape Darfur and go north to Egypt. As they are not welcome, some of them try to cross the Sinai desert to get to Israel. They cross the Egyptian-Israeli border and are usually picked up by Israeli police as they are roaming the Israeli Negev desert. Around 300 of them were sent to prisons, several dozens were sent to Kibbutzim where they work temporarily. They can’t be deported because if sent back to Sudan they will face death, and Israel would not grant them asylum because Sudan is officially an enemy state. Israel's Minister of the interior: "It is a game of arm-wrestling across the border between Israel and Egypt". There is a growing debate in Israel – human rights organizations advocate Israel should help, based on international treaties and the historical precedent of the Jews after World War II, but the Israeli security administration objects, and there are fears that many thousands of refugees are on their way to Israel and will arrive here in the next few weeks.
